Mark Twain

“Nothing so needs reforming as other people’s habits. Fanatics will never learn that, though it be written in letters of gold across the sky. It is the prohibition that makes anything precious.”  Mark Twain

    • Wait, we aren’t all above average? 🙂 (kidding).

Psychologists have been studying Illusory Superiority, the Impostor Syndrome, and the Dunning-Kruger Effect. Basically they are finding that people who are above average underestimate themselves and may end up with impostor syndrome; while those below average overestimate because they don’t know enough to know that they don’t know. To quote David Dunning, “If you’re incompetent, you can’t know you’re incompetent. […] the skills you need to produce a right answer are exactly the skills you need to recognize what a right answer is.”

Believing that one is above average might not be a bad thing; and could help with mental health issues.
